German Chancellor Angela Merkel is a favorite to win the Nobel Peace Prize. But if history is any lesson, this is no guarantee.

Other favorites include Pope Francis, for his speeches on behalf of the poor and for promoting social justice and Denis Mukwege, a Congolese gynecologist who specializes in the treatment of women brutalized by rape in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Mussie Zerai, a Catholic priest of Eritrean descent, is also said to be in the running for his help in saving the lives of thousands of migrants and refugees crossing the Mediterranean.
