Who's the Fairest of Them All?

DW staff (sms)September 1, 2004

A new magazine study asked 1,001 Germans to rate their own attractiveness as well as that of their countrymen. It found westerners called themselves alluring more often than people in the east.

Just over 14 percent of German men think their partner is the most attractive woman in the country according to a study by the Forsa research institute for Stern magazine.

Sorry ladies, but Heidi Klum (photo) beat you to the top of the list with 18 percent of the vote. Still, it's no reason to fret, you've still come out ahead of Claudia Schiffer, who got 10 percent, and Verona Feldbusch's three percent.

It's German men who need to watch out for wandering eyes -- only two percent of women said their partner was the best looking man around.

It's not men's lack of effort that's putting women off. While 90 percent of both sexes agreed taking care of your teeth is important, the study showed men regularly take part in sports and go to the hair-dresser more often than women.

East-West divide

The study also showed another beauty trend. Western Germans rate themselves attractive more often than their countrymen in eastern Germany.

Answering the question of whether their appearance has ever helped them, 62 percent of people from western Germany answered yes, a sentiment felt by 48 percent of people in the former East German states. In fact, 12.5 percent of eastern Germans said their looks actually hurt them, just under six percent of westerners thought so.
