World in Progress: Independence architecture in Africa

After gaining independence in the 1950s and 60s, a building boom started in many African countries. Modern and futuristic architecture mirrored the optimism of these newly independent nations, and the buildings became an expression of new national identities. Even though the architectural design is at par with European and American buildings of the time, they remain relatively unknown abroad.
