Cast your mind back to your first day at school: ABCs, the smell of school dinners and the excitement of other little faces? Every German child has an extra special reason to look forward to setting foot in the classroom. Since the end of the Second World War, the Wundertüte has delighted generations of schoolchildren, and possibly resulted in a few mini wars in the playground too!

Taken from the words Wunder (wonder) and Tüte (bag), a Wundertüte is a bright and colorful cardboard cone filled the promise of not one, not two, but many surprises, including candy, small toys and chocolate. Wundertüten are presented to children on their first day of school, literally as sweeteners for the new and possibly petrifying experience!
